Biography

After clerking with Nalley, Dew & Miner, APLC, throughout law school, Julie Schwartzwald Meaders joined the firm full-time as an associate in October 2021. She is passionate about litigation and client advocacy.As a law student at Tulane, Julie worked in the Tulane Environmental Law Clinic and successfully argued a motion against Formosa Plastics in the 24th JDC, requiring the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality to redo its environmental justice analysis of Formosa’s proposed project.

Julie also served as Editor in Chief of the Tulane Environmental Law Journal. Her comment, which discussed petrochemical expansion in Louisiana, won the Tulane Center for Environmental Law’s Comment Competition in 2020. Her case note, which discussed novel constitutional concepts raised in the litigation of Detroit’s water crisis, was also published by the Tulane Environmental Law Journal. She recently won a second-place prize in the American Bar Association’s Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources student writing competition for her article discussing how litigation can help restore coastal wetland loss, which will be published in Spring of 2022.

While at Tulane Law School, Julie also competed as a member of Pace Appellate Moot Court Team at Tulane and served as her team’s assistant coach. The team made it to semifinals and won “Best Brief for the Intervenor” at the 2021 Jeffrey G. Miller National Environmental Law Moot Court Competition, and Julie won “Best Oralist” in a preliminary round at the same competition in 2020. She also served as Justice of Tulane Law School’s chapter of Phi Alpha Delta, and as the “Know Your Rights” Chair of the school’s chapter of the ACLU. In addition for clerking at Nalley, Dew & Miner throughout law school, Julie interned for Judge James L. Dennis in the Fifth Circuit, did pro bono work with the ELLA Project, worked as a research assistant for Professors Stacey Seicshnaydre and Oliver Houck on various projects, and clerked at two other New Orleans law firms.

Originally from San Diego, California, Julie came to New Orleans in 2007 for her undergraduate degree at Tulane, where she earned a B.A. in Communications and Political Science, and served as the Editor in Chief of the Tulane Hullabaloo for two years. After that, Julie spent one year working as a grassroots organizer in San Diego and then moved back to New Orleans to teach high school at KIPP New Orleans for six years, before deciding to pursue a career in the law. When she’s not busy working, you can catch Julie parading with the New Orleans Cherry Bombs or playing with her two dogs, Ice and Benny.
